A MAN threw a bag of vomit over a police officer during a “particular nasty” incident in a hospital A&E department.

Wayne Turner, of Sycamore Road, off Tunnel Hill, Worcester, came to the attention of officers at Worcestershire Royal Hospital’s accident and emergency department shortly after midnight on Saturday, March 30, due to his abusive behaviour towards staff while awaiting treatment, Worcester Magistrates Court was told.

Kerry Lovegrove, prosecuting, said Turner was causing distress to those in the department and officers attempted to calm him down but he covered PC Bolton’s face, arms and legs with the vomit.

Miss Lovegrove said it was Turner’s “intention to cause the officer harm and discomfort” and he displayed no concern for others around him while continuing to try and spit at the officers as they attempted to restrain him.

Sarah Brady, defending, said Turner, who is a full-time carer for his 13-year-old brother who has Asperger’s syndrome, was referred to hospital by officers after receiving a gash to his head in the city centre. She said he was very drunk and could not remember what happened as he believed his drink may have been spiked but was “disgusted” with what happened and was “ashamed of himself”.

Chairman of the bench Jo Hodges said: “You have assaulted a PC in a particularly nasty way. I am sure you would not like that to happen to you. If someone did that to you, you would be very upset.”

The 21-year-old was given a 12-month community order for the assault, with a requirement for 150 hours of unpaid work, along with a 12-week curfew keeping him inside his home address between 8pm and 7am. Turner must also pay £100 compensation to the officer.

For the public order offence of using threatening words and behaviour likely to cause harassment, alarm or distress, he was fined £70 and ordered to pay £85 costs and a victim surcharge of £60.

Turner was also found guilty of causing criminal damage to a hand dryer belonging to Worcester Magistrates Court at about 11am on Wednesday, March 6, but received no separate penalty as no estimated value had been given.
