THE owners of a hotel in Malvern town centre want to know more about a bronze plaque they have which commemorates the famous opera singer Jenny Lind.
The impressive piece, the work of Swedish sculptor Bengt Inge Lundkvist and dated 1970, was at the Great Malvern Hotel, Graham Road, when the Sutton family took charge of the premises in 1999.
“The year 1970 was the 150th anniversary of her birth, so we were wondering if it was created to mark that occasion,” said Roger Sutton. “We're also wondering why it is at the hotel. Is there some connection between her and the hotel? Did she used to stay here?”
Jenny Lind was one of the biggest superstars of her day, attracting huge crowds and being feted by composers such as Mendelssohn.
She spent the final years of her life at Wynds Point, near British Camp in the Malvern Hills. Her last concert was in the town, and she is buried in Great Malvern Cemetery, Madresfield Road.
Anyone who has information is urged to call Jeremy Sutton at the Great Malvern Hotel on 01684 563411.
