A TALENTED singer from Worcester has spoken of the “privilege” of making her sixth appearance on Songs of Praise.

Millions of viewers of the long-running BBC series tuning-in tomorrow will see Lexie Stobie perform during a special Palm Sunday show broadcast from Canterbury Cathedral.

The former pupil of The River School will sing The Lord Is My Shepherd - a piece she has previously performed for the show.

The 22-year-old, from Warndon Villages, said: “I’m delighted. I’m so excited to be asked again. Last time I appeared was in 2011 when I sang Amazing Grace in Lancaster Cathedral.

“I just love working with the team. I’ve worked with the same producer and team since I was I was 17 and they’re just really lovely and welcoming.

“It’s so nice they keep asking me. It’s a real honour, especially with it being Palm Sunday and the Archbishop’s enthronement taking place at Canterbury Cathedral this week.

“It’s a real privilege to be asked. I just hope everybody enjoys it. I sang The Lord Is My Shepherd for the Young Chorister of the Year competition and it got put out for Radio 4’s pick of the week.

“I also sang it several years ago at Songs of Praise and it got a really good reception. I’d absolutely love to make it onto the show for the seventh time. Hopefully I’ll get another phone call.”

Miss Stobie, who works for West Mercia Police, realised her love of music from an early age, having grown up listening to her parent’s blues and soul vinyl.

Inspired by the gospel music of Aretha Franklin and Bill Wither, she recorded an independent CD of gospel music at the age of 14 and at 16 she entered BBC Radio 2’s Young Chorister of the Year, making it into the top four.

Following this, she was approached by Gary Boon, a producer from Songs of Praise, and her special relationship with the programme began.

Miss Stobie was signed to Universal Records at the age of 19 and sang professionally for two years.

She also spent time in both New York and Nashville, where she wrote and recorded songs and also lived in London for a year.

Carol Parry, headteacher at The River School, said: “We are all so proud of Lexie and her achievements; she is an inspiration to us all and proves that with determination and focus, we can all realise our ambitions.”
