BOOTS and balls made way for aprons and icing when players for Worcester Warriors rugby team tackled a charity bake-off challenge.

Part of the Sixways Stadium was transformed into a cupcake production line-out yesterday morning in a bid to raise funds for Comic Relief and Restart - a charity that supports ill and injured players.

Teammates were set the task of baking, decorating and selling 1,000 cupcakes as part of a national challenge involving all 12 premiership teams that has so far raised over £5,000 for good causes.

Warriors’ flanker Jake Abbott was among the teammates putting their culinary skills to the test.

He said: “We’ve been working hard since 9am - myself, Errie Claassens, Jonny Arr, Matt Mullan and Josh Matavesi - along with some very keen academy players.

“We got involved through the Rugby Players’ Assocation as we’re doing this for their charity, Restart, and Comic Relief, so it’s all for a great cause.

“Everyone’s been brilliant [this morning] and we’ve had some great support from the guys at Sainsbury’s who supplied us with ingredients. It’s full steam ahead.”

Rugby rivals Harlequins are currently topping the league table for donations.
