A PENSIONER has received £1,000 in compensation from a council after a binman defecated on his drive.
The homeowner, from Ryall, near Upton-upon-Severn, said he never made the claim for money but to teach the Malvern hills District Council to have more respect for the people they serve.
He confirmed he has been paid a four figure sum by the council, the bulk of which he will donate to a local charity, although he did not want to say which one.
The man, who is pleased with the payout, said: “I shall not actually hang onto the money. The bulk of it is going to charitable causes. It makes me feel better because it has taught them they can’t just say ‘we’re the council, we can trample all over people’. That’s the lesson that had to be learned.
“It wasn’t a money thing. The council has promised a thorough investigation and I believe them. They needed to learn they can’t make rules about dogs (fouling) but say it doesn’t apply to people.” He said if they fined a dog owner £1,000 if their animal fouled then it had ‘got to be worse’ if a person did it. However, he said the matter was now closed and considered that it had been resolved amicably.
We have already reported how the binman, who has been taken off this particular round, was disciplined by the council but not sacked when he was reported to bosses at Malvern Hills District Council.
The incident happened on January 17 when the pensioner, who has declined to be named, returned home to find human excrement and used toilet roll on his drive. Chief executive Chris Bocock has already apologised to the man personally and the area was cleaned and sanitised on the day of the incident.
Mr Bocock said: “We are disappointed that he has chosen to reopen this matter and to divulge details of our agreement with him.
“For clarification, a payment of £1,000 has been made to (the resident). We understand that (the resident) plans to give some of the money to a local charity – St Richard’s Hospice.”
