'GIVE us some good news' - that's the message from a Worcester family ahead of today's Budget.

The Anderson family - husband and wife Carl and Mandy and their son Ross - know all about how tough life can be, struggling to make ends meet in post-recession Britain.

Husband Carl lost his job as a lorry driver just over a month ago, another city resident to feel the pain of unemployment.

And as Chancellor George Osborne delivers his Budget today, the family, of High Road, tunnel Hill, will be hoping for some positive action to help families like them.

Mrs Anderson, 48, said: "I work part-time as a cleaner and because of what's happened, if they were to cut taxes it could help, especially if I have to get a second job."

The family also say they want the Government to look at helping young people, not least because of 12-year-old Ross, a Tudor Grange Academy pupil.

Mr Anderson, 43, said: "Ross came home from school and had to do some homework on a poem called 'The British', so we could say what this country is all about.

"I didn't know what to put to be honest.

"I lost my job four weeks ago and it seems impossible to get anything else. I'm applying to factories, you name it.

"When I worked at Asds, I took home £800 a month but when I got my driving job it was £400 a week, plus expenses.

"We've lived in this house 16 years and all of that time the government has been saying 'we will help people who help themselves', but it hasn't happened.

"Look at council tax, it's £1,100 or so. That's a lot. And gas and electricity are going up."

Amid rumours Mr Osborne will slash his growth forecast to below one per cent in 2013, there is unlikelt to be much room for manoevre, but some are suggesting he should cut taxes.

Pub landlords, meanwhile, are fearing they could be stung by alcohol duty - and say another rise would be hard to take after a two per cent increase last year.

Colin Kenwrick, from the Berkeley Arms, in School Road, St john's, said: "If they could leave it as it is, that would at least give us a break.

"You hear people coming in and saying if prices go up, they might cut out a session.

"At the moment, we are holding our own but because we don't do food, we rely on drink sales."
