A HEADTEACHER has spoken of his delight after Ofsted inspectors said his school was good overall.

Sean Devlin, of Blessed Edward Oldcorne Catholic College in Timberdine Avenue, Worcester, said the school was “very happy” with its new rating after a “disappointing” satisfactory judgement in 2010.

Inspectors said students at the school achieved well in a wide range of subjects and left with above average exam results.

Students who are disabled, receive help from the pupil premium, or who have special educational needs were said to achieve well.

Overall, students’ behaviour was praised and they were described as keen to learn. They also felt safe and knew that staff were there to help them.

Teaching was deemed to be effective in helping students to learn quickly in the vast majority of lessons.

Inspectors said leaders had a clear awareness of the strengths of the school and identified what areas to develop further.

They added the governing body had improved its role significantly since the last inspection and were active in helping the school to maintain and improve students’ achievement.

In order to become outstanding, the school should ensure all students make enough progress and do their best in maths, while teachers need to recognise more often when students are ready to move on and enable all marking to encourage students to respond or reflect on their learning.

Mr Devlin said: “After a disappointing judgement in 2010, that judged the college as satisfactory, it is right to see this college judged more accurately.

“If it were not for the changes in examination boundaries in English and maths in August 2012 then it is likely that the college would have been judged as outstanding.

“Staff, students, governors and I are sure parents are delighted with the very positive comments made throughout the report.”
