LEDBURY beatboxer Dave Crowe was on the other side of the world, New Zealand in fact, when he met acoustic blues guitarist Andy Balcon and embarked on a musical journey that’s seen the duo, Heymoonshaker, rack up more than 13 million views for their YouTube videos of an afternoon’s busking in London’s Brick Lane.

It’s an unexpected marriage of talents, beatboxing more usually found alongside hip hop or alone, but for Dave Crowe, it’s all about collaboration.

“When we met,” says Andy, “we instantly clicked and were able to complement each other’s sounds from the different genres.”

It’s not just the music they share though. For both of them, Heymoonshaker is about a lifestyle. “We have the same kind of attitude to life and the way we live/ It’s kind of a spiritual journey,” says Andy.

“Even though we’re working with booking agents and have the new EP out, we are still doing it our own way and trying to keep the qualities that have been there since we started on this journey,” says Andy.

Crowe is a master beatboxer, a man who pushes his skills to the point of human implausibility, creating sounds that defy belief. He discovered his talent for beatboxing when he was 18. “I went to a club and saw a guy beatboxing,” he recalls. “I’d never seen power like that and I’ve been obsessed since then, and once I gained the power to do it I really enjoyed practising.”

Those 13m views perhaps go some way to explaining how they are able to busk their way across the world, though they’ll actually be having a bus for the current tour, which comes to an end at The Jailhouse in Hereford on March 30.

“But we will be doing some busking along the way,” says Crowe, “to pay for petrol.”

Watch them on YouTube and you’ll see, though, that this is no ordinary busking.

Crowe’s’s extraordinary, almost unbelievable, ability to re-create a vast array of sounds, works like the best street theatre to stop people in their tracks, and a crowd gathers to watch.

The current tour, 15 dates in the UK and Ireland, coincides with the release of their debut EP Shakerism, which comes with a special bonus in the form of the soundtrack to part two of the YouTube sensation.

When Heymoonshaker arrive in Hereford they’ll be joined by John Fairhurst, who’s been nominated for a British Blues Award this year – “He’s the most innovative blues artist in Great Britain,” says Crowe – and by harmonica player Joey Strouzer, the sax player from the Andy Balcon Band who’s coming over for the gig from Scandinavia and trombone player Andy Davies.

“It’ll be great,” says Crowe, “to end the tour in Hereford.”

Heymoonshaker will be at The Jailhouse 10pm to 3am.
