DISGRUNTLED drivers are being asked to contact the Office of Fair Trading (OFT) with their concerns over fuel prices – with Worcester’s MP saying it could prove vital.

Robin Walker met with OFT investigators on Monday in the wake of the watchdog’s report in January which refused to refer the industry to the Competition Commission over pricing.

At the meeting, Mr Walker told the group he “does not believe” there is no case for retailers to answer.

And he has told your Worcester News the watchdog has confirmed it wants to hear from anyone willing to provide details of collusion or predatory pricing at the pumps.

The OFT investigation into sky-high prices last September came after pressure from the Fair Fuel UK campaign.

Mr Walker, who is a member of Fair Fuel UK, said: “When I had the meeting with them I said our constituents, frankly, do not believe the OFT’s findings, and asked them to take another look at the situation.

“People clearly still have a different view to that of the OFT and what came out of it is that they are happy to hear from people on it.

“They are asking for evidence of price collusion, a call for evidence, which is an outcome I’m pleased with at this stage.”

The OFT’s study showed that petrol prices climbed from 76p a litre to £1.36 from 2003 to 2012, and from 78p to £1.42 a litre for diesel.

Yesterday, Powick Service Station was charging £1.39 for a litre of petrol and £1.46 for diesel. Sainsbury’s slashed 4p per litre off diesel and petrol yesterday following a drop in crude oil prices, and Tesco confirmed it will cut prices by up to 3p today.

A spokesman for Tesco said the reductions would “vary by region”. Yesterday the company was charging £1.38 per litre of unleaded and £1.44 for diesel, a 2p cut.

Roy Devlia, who runs Powick Service Station, said: “Drivers are shopping around a lot at the moment. They are looking for the best prices because they haven’t got so much money.  It’s not easy because we’re competing with the big boys.

“We actually cut our prices by 2p about a week ago but you do notice the bigger stations don’t pass reductions on as much.”
