The males, three aged 17, one aged 16 and one 18-year-old are in custody following the death of a 50-year-old man who was attacked in Sillins Avenue, Redditch, at approximately 12.25am on Sunday.

Nigel Shakespear, aged 50, had been to the Kings Arms pub with his female partner and they were walking home.

His life support was switched off yesterday afternoon.

The five males, who are all local to the Redditch area, were arrested shortly after he was pronounced dead.

Detective Inspector Adam Hartwright said: “We are still appealing to the public to come forward if they have any information about this incident. We have had a good response so far and we are piecing together what happened in the early hours of Sunday morning.

“Officers are carrying out house to house inquiries and local police patrols have been stepped up in the Lakeside area of Redditch. We are also viewing CCTV and would urge anyone who has yet to come forward to contact us as soon as possible.

“We would remind residents that this type of crime is rare in the town and we are working hard to get to the bottom of what happened at the weekend."

Anyone with information can call police on 101 or Crimestoppers, anonymously, on 0800 555111.

The coroner will be informed of the man’s death and a post mortem examination will take place in the next few days.
