IT was a tough match for us down at Wasps in the LV= Cup on Sunday and probably one that wasn’t too good to watch.
We closed to within four points of them towards the end, but they managed to pull clear again and it is just one match we have to move on from and look ahead to Friday night’s Aviva Premiership clash with Saracens at Sixways.
We are at home on Friday and we want to win all of our home games — this one’s no different.
It should be a cold, windy and rainy night with a good noisy crowd behind us — and we love making Sixways a difficult place for teams to come.
We have analysed Sarries and know where their weaknesses are.
It is a good time to play them too as they are missing several key players, such as Alex Goode and Owen Farrell, as well as hooker Shalk Brits, who will be with South Africa and is an outstanding player.
Still, they have plenty of quality throughout their squad, but we enjoy Friday night games and we are all looking forward to it.
The likes of Sam Betty and Matt Kvesic have had a good rest and the back row will be a big area for us — we need to slow their ball down and take it off them as often as possible.
Our line-out didn’t function again at Wasps, which is something we need to address and that will be a big work-on for us this week ahead of the Sarries game.
Although it was disappointing to lose at Wasps because we felt we could go there and win, we are still top of our group.
We now have games with London Irish and Saracens in the LV= Cup in the new year, so we are in a good position to reach the quarter-finals.
We tried to play a bit of rugby at Adams Park, threw the ball around and we had quite a few new players in the side.
The likes of Rob O’Donnell did really well at tighthead and young Ryan Furniss also impressed when he came on.
We can take a number of positives out of the game and it was good to see Ben Howard grab another try — he always seems to score whenever he plays.
It was a big ask for Ollie Hayes to play the full match at hooker after not having had a game for about six weeks and we struggled in the line-outs, but he had a cracking game around the park and with his tackling and carrying.
Each week we work hard on our analysis of the opposition and the lads are finally getting the gist of that now.
We look at all clubs, work out areas to target and are starting to trust our system of analysis, which will help produce results.
