'Willkommen' to Berlin in 1931, Cabaret was one of the first victims of Nazi terror when Hitler took power in 1933 - Bill Kenwright's latest revival is cool.
Master of Ceremonies and narrator of the story is star of the show Will Young - not only is he a fine singer whose voice is instantly recognisable, as the enigmatic clown like figure of Emcee he guides us through the story of 19 year old club singer Sally Bowles and her American bisexual lover Cliff.
Sally played by Siobhan Dillon who finished third in the reality show How Do You Solve a Problem Like Maria has a tough act to follow - Liza Minnelli played the role in the 1972 film.
Siobhan gave a good account of herself as an accomplished singer producing a superb rendition of the ballad Maybe This Time reaching those incredibly high notes.
The love story between Fraulein Schneider (Lyn Paul) and Herr Schultz (Linal Haft) was heart warming at times despite its tragic conclusion.
Cabaret is designed to 'bowl you over' and does this with ease - a fabulous cast of singers come dancers/acrobats, fast paced set changes and plenty of razzmatazz.
The cast stripped naked including Will Young for the the final scene before entering the concentration camp shower - a thought provoking night out.
Cabaret runs until Saturday, 21st September at the Bristol Hippodrome.
