I best own up to the fact that I have never seen the film or stage musical and had no idea what to expect other than being told by those who had that 'it's amazing', everyone leaves happy... well it's certainly different.
Big hair, fantastic costumes, outrageous shoes, three drag queens and Priscilla the fabulous mini-bus.
A story of three drag queens Tick (Jason Donovan), transvestite Bernadette (Richard Grieve) and Felicia (Graham Weaver) who travel around the Australian outback en-route to Alice Springs in a jalopy of a mini bus meeting various and fascinating folks as you might imagine in the outback.
Opening to It's Raining Men sung by The Three Divas frequently suspended in the air on high wires other pop classics include: Don't Leave Me This Way, Go West, True Colours, I Will Survive, Always On My Mind and Girls Just Wanna Have Fun.
On arrival in Alice Springs Tick finally meets his six year old son Benji (Callum John Geddes) for the first time who is a local Bristol boy, this scene was beautiful and touching.
The show is wonderfully vibrant and camp - there is real substance that focuses on the challenges that gay people face in the outside world.
The class act is Bernadette the ageing transsexual who has mastered the performance to perfection.
The number of changes by the entire cast is incredible, however there are 500 costumes, 200 hats, 100 wigs, 150 pairs of shoes, and a mountain of mascara to be got through which is probably challenging for those backstage.
A very enjoyable show with a positive 'feel good factor' runs until Saturday, 27th April at the Bristol Hippodrome.
