WORCESTER City manager Carl Heeley is running the rule over a defender with Champions League experience.
The St George’s Lane boss currently has Martyn Naylor on trial and he played the first-half in a 7-0 victory over Pershore Town on Tuesday.
The 33-year-old right-back played for Welsh Premier League outfit TNS when they faced five-time European Cup champions Liverpool in a 2005 preliminary-round game, just months after the Anfield side secured the trophy.
He also featured for Rhyl in their Champions League campaign in 2009 when they faced Partizan Belgrade.
The experienced defender, who was with Telford United and Stafford Rangers last season, began his career at Hereford United before moving to Shrewsbury Town.
He has also played for Scottish League side Greenock Morton.
But it was with TNS that Naylor finally settled down, spending six years with the Welsh League stalwarts and making 118 appearances.
“Martyn has been training with us a couple of times and, with Ryan Clarke feeling slightly sore from Saturday, I decided to have a look at him,” Heeley said “He has got good pedigree.”
City are in the market for a new right-back following the departure of Graham Ward at the end of last season.
While Heeley has said he may use skipper Clarke or utility wide player Neil Cartwright in the position, having the experience of Naylor could be beneficial for the club.
“We’ll see what develops over the next couple of weeks,” the City boss said.
“I want to be making decisions on my trialists soon because it is not fair on anyone to take them through pre-season if we are not going to keep them.”
Heeley also had ex-Blackburn Rovers youngster Ryan Robinson on trial at Pershore.
The 28-year-old goalkeeper was released by Blue Square Bet Premier outfit Bath City last season and has already featured for Cheltenham Town on trial this summer.
Robinson, who spent two years at Ewood Park, has a wealth of experience in non-league’s top division, having played for Morecambe, Southport and Forest Green Rovers as well as Bath.
“I have made no secret that I want to have two goalkeepers this term,” Heeley said.
“I spoke to Ryan at the end of last season but he wanted to keep his options open.
“But he got in contact with me to ask if he could still come down and I had a look at him against Pershore.
“He didn’t have a lot to do so, like Martyn, we will see what develops.”
Heeley, while not getting carried away with the 7-0 scoreline at Pershore, said there were a lot of positives to take from the friendly.
“We may have to play someone like Pershore in the early rounds of the FA Cup so we needed to go there with the right application and attitude,” he added.
“We did that, were ruthless in front of goal and also kept a clean sheet.”
