A BROTHER and sister from Malvern were the stand-out athletes at the World Duathlon Championships in Edinburgh, picking up a gold and a silver medal between them.
Former Olympian Ceris Styler returned to international competition with a bang, earning a second-placed finish.
She then saw older brother James Gilfillan cross the line in first position, completing a great day for the family.
The pair, representing Great Britain, took on the gruelling duathlon event in the Scottish capital, made up of a 10-kilometre run, a 40km cycle and a further 5km run around landmarks like Arthur’s Seat and the Scottish Parliament.
Styler’s impressive comeback silver came in the women’s 30 to 34 age category where fellow Brits Victoria Gill and Joanna Walker also won medals, making it an all-British podium.
It was in the men’s 30 to 34 group where Gilfillan secured his victory, winning his category by nine minutes 30 seconds.
The former Upper Welland athlete was also the overall fastest age group athlete, finishing three minutes ahead of the winning 25 to 29 group athlete.
Gilfillan said: “It was a fantastic weekend. I had hoped to do well and maybe win my age group but I knew that wasn’t going to be a formality. Thankfully, on the day everything went to plan.
“The whole plan was nearly rumbled by the added pressure placed on me by my own sister, who, only 10 minutes before my race, was completing her brilliant second-placed finish.
“But, in the end, she set up a great day for our family.”
