CHRIS Smith insists wearing the captain's armband is not something he takes for granted.
Worcester City boss Andy Preece has yet to officially name his skipper for the new season but has handed the role to Smith for the first two pre-season friendly games.
But the 26-year-old, who often deputised for Des Lyttle last season, appears favourite for the position full-time and should lead his team out against Walsall on Saturday (3pm).
He said: "I haven't been told but I hope so. Last year Des Lyttle was club captain but when he wasn't playing, I took the armband.
"I am enjoying being captain but it's down to the gaffer. I am not just going to presume I am captain."
Smith took his place in the defence as City followed up last weekend's 3-2 victory against Evesham United with a 5-1 reverse at Bromsgrove Rovers in mid-week.
He said: "We were a bit disappointed with how we played against Bromsgrove but the games at the start are really to get the new lads in and about fitness.
"But the result matters so we are disappointed. The first couple of games really take it out of you because it always seems to be sunny on matchdays and raining every other day.
"But the training has been really good. It's been hard but we have enjoyed it. Just to be back playing is enjoyable."
Walsall, promoted as League Two champions last season, are expected to bring their first team and are the first of four professional sides to face City before the season starts for real in three weeks.
Following the visit of the Saddlers, Preece's team host Yeovil, Stockport and Nottingham Forest as the St George's Lane outfit bid to hit the ground running come August 11.
Smith added: "Walsall just got promoted last season but it's always good to test yourself. They will be looking at it as a fitness session as well.
"They are all professional sides so it's good to test yourself against them and, with me being from Derby, I am up for the Forest game straight away."
