A YOUNG man was rescued from the River Severn in Worcester this morning and had to be taken to hospital with hypothermia after he spent half an hour in the water.

The emergency services received reports of a person in the water near the Worcester News building in the city's Hylton Road, St John's, at around 4.37am. Boats from Worcester and Evesham were deployed and a first responder from Upton. One person was rescued by crews and transferred to paramedics on the bank. He was taken to Worcestershire Royal Hospital in Worcester for further treatment.

A spokesman for West Midlands Ambulance Service NHS trust said they received a call at around 4.50am with a paramedic in a rapid response vehicle and an ambulance crew joining police and fire crews.

He said: "Our crews were on standby while a search was done of the area, then a man in his twenties was found having been in the water for approximately 30 minutes. He was hypothermic and taken to Worcestershire Royal Hospital."
