A DISUSED incinerator could become the site of a low-impact eco-community.
The future use of the former Worcestershire County Council waste incinerator at Hanley Swan, near Malvern, will be discussed at a public consultation and exhibition at Hanley Swan Village Hall tomorrow between 6pm and 8pm and on Saturday from 9am to noon, organised by architects Boughton Butler of Worcester.
No decision has yet been taken on what plans will go forward but one of the leading options is for a “low-impact eco-community” where people grow their own food and live and work on site.
Other options include returning the land to agricultural use, a small business park or some form of reuse of the building at Haylers End.
The incinerator has been disused for many years and was bought at auction by a private buyer last year.
Architect Andrew Boughton said: “Although the site could theoretically be brought back into use again as an incinerator, this is not the preferred option by a long way. The problem is that no matter how desirable, neither the removal of the unsightly 10-storey high structure nor the remediation of the contamination left there by years of use will happen on its own.
“What we have been doing is trying to find a win-win solution for all involved, which is why the consultation is so important.”
