THE legacy of a long-standing city club member has been remembered with a memorial.

Worcester u3a Group's Elizabeth Coxon, who died in 2016 aged 69, left around £27,000 in her will to be used for the benefit of members.

Publicity and development secretary Ferne Langdon said: "We wanted to provide a memorial to Elizabeth and the membership decided on a bench to be set by the river.

"We ordered a bench from Worcester City Council and it is set in a gap between two sycamore trees on the Worcester Cathedral side of the river between the boathouse and the ferry steps."

The bench was unveiled by mayor Louis Stephen with many u3a members in attendance, including former mayors Roger Berry and Jo Hodges.

Art-lover Elizabeth, a former primary school and special needs teacher, loved to watch clouds.

A plaque on the bench says, 'Sit a while and watch the clouds go by'.

Group chair Laurence Wale, who is stepping down at the AGM this week at the end of his three-year term, was instrumental in getting the bench in place.

Cllr Stephen said: "Thank you to Worcester u3a for making this bench possible.

"For very many older people and those with disabilities, a bench, and ideally a series of benches, is the difference between being able to go for a walk and not."

Worcester u3a, part of a wider national network, is an active and lively organisation for those no longer working full-time.

Run by a committee elected by its members, it offers opportunities to ‘Learn, Laugh, Live’ – the motto of the national network.

It offers around 90 interest and activity groups for members, meeting fortnightly at various venues around the city between September and May.
