THIS is the magical moment a man with Motor Neurone Disease had the "privilege" to turn on his town's Christmas lights.

John Adams was diagnosed with MND five and a half years ago and was told at the time he had a life expectancy of just 18 months.

This weekend, he was the guest of honour as Christmas arrived in Droitwich and invited to switch on the town's festive lights on Saturday (November 26).

"It was such a privilege to be asked to turn on the Christmas lights in my local town," he said.

"I had a wonderful time and I am certainly feeling very much in the Christmas spirit."

Last Christmas, Mr Adams raised thousands of pounds for vital research.

With the government having committed an MND research campaign from its budget, Mr Adams decided to make and sell Christmas gift tags.

In the first three weeks after launching his fundraiser, Mr Adams raised £4,000 - smashing his initial £300 goal.

His daughter, Helen Millward, said at the time: “He realises a cure for motor neurone disease will never be found in his lifetime, but his mission is to raise as much money as he can for research to ensure no families go through the hurt we have gone through."
