TWO supermarket cashpoints have been raided within weeks of each other.
The Worcester News previously reported that masked men hit a cashpoint at Sainsbury’s in Buttercup Walk, Malvern, at around 12.20am on Tuesday.
We can now reveal that burglars also stole money from a cash machine at Morrisons, opposite Malvern Shopping Park, at about 12.50am on August 24.
Detective Chief Inspector Leighton Harding, of West Mercia Police, said: “Both incidents are currently being investigated, as is normal practice, we look to see if there are any other incidents that may be connected and investigate accordingly.”
Bren King, aged 42, of Duke of Edinburgh Way, Malvern, was at Malvern Shopping Park the day after the Morrisons raid.
He said: “I saw the police at the cashpoint at Morrisons and I overheard them talking to - I presume - the manager of Morrisons.
“They were saying the cashpoint room [behind the ATM] had been broken into and the alarm to the safe room had gone off.
“Approximately four men had broken into this safe room. Sainsbury’s was also targeted, I presume it must be the same gang.”
Mr King said he saw that a steel door to the cashpoint room had been heavily damaged by what he suspects was a crowbar.
He added: “The internal door was all split around the locks.
“My wife and I were sat by the cashpoint. I was telling people the cashpoint wasn’t working whilst trying to listen to them [police officers].
“The cashpoints are now blocked off with steel plates so looks like they won’t be returning.”
The burglars let off a fire alarm inside the property, according to a source.
The source added that night staff were working at the store at the time of the raid.
West Mercia Police declined to tell the Worcester News how the raiders stole money from the cashpoint at Morrisons because the investigation is ongoing.
Anyone with information about either raid can ring police on 101 or anonymously call Crimestoppers on 0800 555111, quoting incident numbers 9s of Tuesday 4 for the Sainsbury’s incident and 031s of August 24 for the Morrisons burglary.
