CELEBRATIONS are in order for a Worcester woman a whose work in the community has been recognised by the Prime Minister.
Laura Gill, 28, from Leigh, set up a weekly social club for adults with learning disabilities in 2011 and has since seen membership grow to more than 130.
She was named a Point of Light by Prime Minister David Cameron in recognition of her outstanding volunteering in the Worcester community, and was presented with the award by the city's MP Robin Walker.
Mr Cameron said: "With the Monday Night Club, Laura has given hundreds of young adults with learning disabilities across Worcester the opportunity to make new friends and learn new skills in a fun, safe environment.
"She has made a huge difference in the lives of those who attend the club and I am delighted to recognise Laura has the UK's 470th Point of Light."
Each day, a UK resident is selected to receive the award to celebrate their remarkable achievements.
Miss Gill said: "I am surprised, but very honoured to receive this award from the Prime Minister.
"I have enjoyed working to build The Monday Night Club into the successful venture that it is now.
"It has given me a real purpose in life - and I love to see all the smiling faces every Monday.
"All the hard work that I, and the other volunteers, have put into has been worthwhile. There are many socially isolated people in Worcester who have made strong friendships through the club.
"I also enjoy representing others like me through Speakeasy Now."
The Monday Night Club was first set up after Miss Gill left college and missed her friends, leading her to set up a club to kick-start her social life again.
It offers people with learning disabilities the opportunity to make friends and socialise together in a safe environment.
As well as DJ-ing at the Club, Miss Gill also organises day trips around the country for members and coaches the club football team.
Among her many successes at the club, which is now a registered charity, was securing a £4,000 donation to take 37 people on a two-day trip to London.
Alongside helping at the weekly club, she is also Chair of Worcestershire People’s Parliament, a group of powerful leaders, supported by Speakeasy NOW, who speak up on issues that affect people with learning disabilities in the county.
Robin Walker MP said: "It is fantastic that Laura's achievements have been recognised. She is a very active young lady and she makes a huge contribution."
The Monday Night Club meets every Monday evening at Barbourne Ex-Services Club in The Moors, Worcester.
