GRAPHIC design students will be helping people find their way around a market town.
The University of Worcester's Graphic Design students have been asked to revamp the wayfinding signage of Tenbury Wells.
Second year students currently studying Graphic Information Design, one of the key strands on the university’s Graphic Design and Multimedia BA course, are working on the design project after being invited to evolve signage concepts by the town’s councillors.
Students from the university have previously been asked to design signs for Malvern and Upton-on-Severn, where some of the student designs will be taken to final application.
The Mayor of Tenbury Wells, Councillor George Price, said: “It was a delight to meet the students from the University of Worcester; we are sure they will produce some exciting designs and look forward to visiting the university to see how their ideas develop.”
The Tenbury wayfinding signage brief will form one of a number of live briefs that the students will encounter in the second and final years of their degrees.
These projects often develop examples of work that students can then successfully use in their portfolios at future job interviews.
Second year design student Lauren Mills said: “I feel that working with the clients at Tenbury Town Council will give me valuable hands-on experience while at the same time helping me to develop my design abilities.
“Working with a live brief has much more purpose and potential than working on an example project; it means we are working with a real client with real goals and requirements.”
Andy Stevenson, senior lecturer in design, who developed the course’s area of Graphic Information Design, said: “It’s great to be working with the Mayor and councillors in Tenbury Wells; they have a very realistic set of signage design challenges which I’m hoping our students will help resolve.
“We are hopeful that we will then be able to take some of the students’ designs further and apply them in situ, which will be a fantastic opportunity for the students to be involved with.”
Some of Tenbury’s councillors will also be visiting the university to help feed into the ideas
The design students will now research and develop a set of working prototype visual concepts that will be presented to the Town Council after May 2014.
