A WORCESTER man has been handed a community order for racially abusing a police officer.

Gary Biddle aimed a number of racially motivated comments at police sergeant Dave Qubain after being taking into custody, Worcester Magistrates Court was told. Biddle was given a 12-month community order with the requirements of co-operating with the probation service and taking part in a rehabilitation project.

Samantha Webley, prosecuting, said police attended an address in Ingles Drive, St John’s, after Biddle’s pregnant partner made an allegation of assault on Sunday, October 14.

Biddle is awaiting trial on the assault charge.

She said: “In the cell he started making racist remarks to police sergeant Qubain and he was told to keep it down. He was moved to another cell and continued to shout.

“When asked about the racial matter, he fully admitted to making the comments and said he was a racist.”

Belinda Ariss, defending, said: “It was purely because he was in drink. Had he been sober he would not have made these comments to Mr Qubain.”

She said Biddle’s thoughts and views were “entrenched” as he had an “unfortunate schooling”, spending only one or two months at a school before moving on with his travelling family.

She described Biddle as very immature, but said he was seeking help with literacy, numeracy and his views.

Biddle, aged 29, of Chatcombe Drive, Warndon, was also ordered to pay costs of £85 and £50 compensation to Sgt Qubain.
