WORCESTER City Football Club faces closure if supporters don’t back the £100 season ticket scheme.
Only 340 season tickets have been sold of a hoped-for 1,500 and if that figure does not double by Friday then directors say they are considering “bringing the curtain down on the club”.
They admit the future of the 111-year-old club, which moves out of its St George’s Lane home next month, “is in grave doubt” at Kidderminster Harriers without the support.
More than 4,000 people were at Worcester’s final match at the Lane against Chester last month and the club are pleading with them to come forward.
A club statement said: “The board would urge anyone who remotely cares about the future of the football club to show their support. “The sad reality is that if enough people don’t come forward the board will have no alternative but to seriously consider bringing the curtain down on the club as it is not prepared to go forward without the confidence that it can fulfil its financial obligations during the coming season.
“The chips are down. Worcester City Football Club belongs to the people of Worcester. There are no millionaires waiting in the wings to save it.
“The board of directors wish to place on record its thanks to those who have already committed to purchasing a season ticket. However, the stark truth is that if we cannot at least double this number of sales by May 10, the club’s future is in grave doubt.
“Surviving on an average gate of 800 has been hard enough whilst at St George’s Lane. However, if this is going to drop to around 300 at Kidderminster, the club’s future looks very bleak.
“The move to Kidderminster represents a step into the unknown for the club. Yet, despite this, it has to set a budget, including a playing budget, for next season. It needs to do this with a degree of confidence.”
Everyone who has bought a ticket so far would be refunded if the target is not met. To buy a £100 season ticket, contact the club office on 01905-23003 or by calling in between 10am and 3pm from tomorrow to Friday.
