WORCESTERSHIRE batter Olly Cox has received his first call-up from his native Canada for a training camp in the United States ahead in April ahead of a potential debut in the T20 series with USA.
Cox, who is studying for a business and management degree at Exeter University, will fly out to America on Sunday for a week-long camp, where he will be hoping to earn a spot in the Canada squad for the bilateral series against USA from April 7 to 13.
Ontario-born Cox, initially part of the Worcestershire Pathway as a 10-year-old, is hoping to ultimately stake a claim to be part of the Canadian squad for this summer’s ICC Men’s T20 World Cup.
He made his senior debut for Worcestershire last summer and scored a half-century against New Zealand in a T20 game at New Road.
Cox said: "I’m flying out on Sunday for training camp and and if I do well, hopefully I will get selected for the USA Series.
"This came out of the blue. They called my agent about a month ago. They’ve got ODI status and are also in the ICC T20 World Cup.
"Canada have also got quite a senior squad of players and I think they are looking to recruit.
"I’m a dual citizen and, with Canada an associate member of the ICC, that doesn’t influence anything with my cricket here in England.”
Regarding the possibility of playing in the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup, Cox said: "I wasn’t anticipating something like that at the start of the winter but if it did happen it would be an unbelievable experience.
"Canada have to play USA, Pakistan, Ireland, India in the group stages and if I had a chance it would be pretty much a dream come true.
"The aim goal would be to try and get in the World Cup squad, but there are a couple of stages first and it’s up to me to keep working hard and improving as much as I can."
